Choosing a Professional in the Media Sector

What does a cinematographer do?:
A cinematographer’s (who is also known as a director of photography) job is to be responsible for the development of images and clips in order to make up the final film. Cinematographers before the filming starts will discuss with the director how the script represents the film.
What to do in order to become a cinematographer?:
In order to become a cinematographer you must have a passion for Film/Photography . You must have the working good knowledge with film equipment such as filters and film stock. other understandings you must be aware of are Exposure, Composition, Lightning and development.
What type of experiences are needed?: Understanding of photography to capture images and light. An understanding with with lenses and filter and working with a camera crew.

Greg Fraser, a cinematographer I have chosen as a professional in cinematography is known for working in movies such as Lion, Star Wars: A Rouge One Story, Vice and the upcoming two movies he has worked in “The Batman” and “Dune”. As a cinematographer, his task is to capture moving images with his choice of different filters and light equipment depending on the way he likes to capture the story of a film, he likes to change up his lightning to get the right tone and style so that its able to convey and tell the story towards the audience

Course 1 choice:

Film critic


A Film critic is someone who takes notes of films in order to review them and have other duties such as researching information about the film makers/ the film, keeping up to date with critical theory such as understanding the connection between the audience and film with what kind of social message it gives out. In the career path of becoming a film critic, the job can also end up combining with writing books to do with film or the criticism with film.

In order to become a film critic you can do different degrees that are related:

Foundation, degree or a postgraduate with Film Studies, Journalism, English and Film and Television.


Course 2 choice:


A Tv and Film Assistant Directors job is to make sure everything is going right on set and handle everyday day to day tasks such as making sure the scheduling on filming is right and there are no changes, recruiting and meeting the cast and crew and also supervising teams on 2nd and 3rd AD’S.

As a Tv and Film Assistant director, you could have other roles as well. These include: producing daily schedules in production, having messages delivered and the action in the background scenes. The entry requirements for this course you will need 4 to 5 Gcse’s for a level 3, 4 or a 5 course.



Course 3 Choice:

BA Creative Writing and Film Studies:


The creative writing and film studies course include developing the confidence in writing through the core skills and techniques with experimenting writing with script writing, non fiction, and short stories including from genres. In the course you will also learn how to approach Film and Television as entertainment and culture. The length of this course is 3 years with the study time mode of full time. In the first year you study 6 modules. Each of the modules include:

  • Writers Tool Kit:

The first Module will help you develop the writer inside of you and to

Introduce key concepts that will allow your imagination to flourish

Through the writing exercises

  • Film Form: Understanding the elements of film and how do they come together to create a meaning. This will help you learn and describe

  • Introduction to Film Making:

        Having a go with the Equipment in the editing and studio facilities to complete tasks with groups with the best practical skill

  • Facts into art:

Discovering how to convert real life into good story telling by generating ideas and skills

  • Poetry, Performance and Play:

Learning how to craft your own words  into monolouges and poetries with

           skills that are taught.

Understanding and writing about  analysing the idea of film and how it works for the audience,

Employment Research in the Media Sector

Production Journalist.
Location: Glasgow.
A production Journalist is someone who works on the editing side of news by gathering all information together in order to create engaging articles from your own reporting based on recent news material gathered by other colleagues with a good knowledge of how digital publishing and social distribution works..
The role includes having a strong understanding what type of news audiences are looking for from websites such as social media or normal news channels, the basic knowledge of how to use editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, the confidence of using storytelling digitally in order to create articles including graphics and videos, photo and text. And core reporting skills.
The skills and experience that are needed for this job are
Being a Team worker with a collaborating mindset and good communication skills, passionate and very informed with the industry trends in journalism and being confident with committing in getting the job done.
