Adobe Illustrator- understanding how to add spaces between letters

In lesson we learnt how to add space between letters on adobe illustrator, to figure how the spacing works so we can play around with kerning and understand that how important it is for the spacing to work. in the future however, i am hoping to develop and understand how to add the spaces as it is a struggle for me to get around understanding the software.
